Automotive Service Repair
The Auto Service program at the Pohanka Training Center is comprised of the comprehensive study of the automobile, its systems, and its components, as well as the tools and techniques that are required to maintain and repair today’s complex automobiles. Also stressed during the two-year course of study is the developing and practicing of safe and efficient work habits, the customer relation skills, communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as positive work ethic practices.
The curriculum that is used to instruct the students will be reviewed and updated regularly and is based upon standards that are set forth by industry, ASE and by the Pohanka group of dealerships. The curriculum will be taught by a teacher with an extensive background in automotive repair and facility management.
Students during the two-year program will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to gain employment at one of the Pohanka Dealerships. Instruction will be provided in the following automotive areas: brake systems, steering suspension and wheel alignment, engine mechanical and performance systems, heating and air conditioning systems, vehicle electrical and electronic systems and transmissions, as well as safety, communication skills and work ethics.
Students before selecting this course should have above average reading and comprehension skills, a basic knowledge of personal computers, basic mathematics and science skills, as well as the ability to think and work independently.

Course Include:
- Identify and properly use hand tools and equipment.
- Properly select, store, handle and use the needed chemicals.
- Demonstrate safe and industry accepted work habits.
- Demonstrate good communication, reading and math skills through the usage of journals, writing and calculation of repair orders, and through dealing with customers and fellow students.
- Demonstrate the ability to find and record information from computer software and texts.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform basic maintenance and scheduled preventive repairs on a vehicle.
- Demonstrate the ability to mount, balance and repair tires.
- Identify various designs and components of the brake system.
- Show an understanding of the hydraulic system, the ABS and traction control systems through written and performance-based tests.
- Using resources, select the proper repair procedures, components and tools to repair the brake system.
- Demonstrate the ability to diagnose, repair and maintain the brake system to industry standards.
- Demonstrate the ability to use the tools and equipment necessary to repair and maintain the steering and suspension system.
- Identify the various components and the different types of suspension and steering systems used today. Perform wheel alignments, tire balancing and repair.
- Demonstrate through both written and performance testing the ability to repair and maintain the steering/suspension system and vehicle safety system to ASE and industry standards.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of electrical theory through mathematical calculations, written and verbal reports and testing. Identify electrical components and their uses.
- Appropriately use computer software, testers, tools and manuals to properly diagnose and repair electrical components.
- Demonstrate the ability to read and understand complex wiring schematics and diagrams.
- Demonstrate the ability to repair the electrical system through written and performance testing the ASE and industry standards.
- Be able to identify the components of the ignition system, fuel system, exhaust system, emission systems, and computerized engine management systems.
- Demonstrate through written and performance tests the ability to service and repair the engine performance related systems.
- Demonstrate the ability to use the tools, equipment, shop manuals and computer software needed to repair the various systems properly.
- Demonstrate the ability to diagnose and repair the engine performance related systems to ASE and industry standards.
- Demonstrate the ability to select and use the tools and equipment necessary to repair the engine.
- Identify the components and systems of the engine, as well as construction methods and materials.
- Record and measure specifications.
- Demonstrate the ability to service and repair the automotive engine through written and performance tests.
- Demonstrate the ability to diagnose and repair the engine to ASE and industry standards.
- Be able to identify the components of the typical heating and A/C system
- Demonstrate the proper usage and selection of tools, equipment and the chemicals used to repair the system.
- Demonstrate through written and performance-based tests the ability to repair the system.

- Be able to identify the components of the typical manual and automatic transmission.
